(13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do - Amy Morin)

Starting with meditation

Image
'To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, and to cleanse one’s mind - this is the teaching of the Buddha.' Meditation has been scientifically proven to have many health benefits, like reduced anxiety and better emotional health. While this is great, many people struggle with incorporating meditation in their daily routines. Even though it takes some effort to adopt new habits, there’s one thing at play that doesn’t like meditation. This is the mind. But why the mind hates meditation? So, I won’t deny that experienced meditators won’t have too much trouble meditating whenever they want, because the wise part of their thinking mind has become dominant. However, the average Joe, myself included often experiences a mind that’s overly active: eager to solve puzzles, analyze past events and calculate future possibilities, no matter if it’s past midnight. A mind is a precious tool. Yet when it’s out of control, it can be a destructive monster as well. The quality of our thoughts ...

When Swami Vivekananda called the youth…

Image
Swami Vivekananda travelled across the country. He invited the youth to sacrifice and work for uplifting the poor, as it was their duty to society: “who cares whether there is a heaven or a hell, who cares if there a soul or not, who cares if there is an unchangeable or not? Here is the world, and it is full of misery. Go out into it as Buddha did, and struggle to lessen it or die in the attempt. Forget yourselves; this is the first lesson to be learnt, whether you are a theist or an atheist, whether you are an agnostic or a Vedantist, a Christian or a Mohammaden.” Of course, sacrificing one's personal desires and aspirations and going out and serving the poor is not easy. There would be many who would oppose and ridicule. In a letter to one of his disciples, Vivekananda writes that passing through this test is important. It is the school that steels us and makes us strong: “I have been ridiculed, distrusted, and have suffered for my sympathy for the very men who scoff and...

The clock is ticking

Image
'Tick Tick...' Sound of a clock ticking. Sometimes when we are sitting alone in a quiet room and if you have an analogue clock on the wall, there is a chance, you will hear that 'tick tick' sound. Whats special about that ticking is the synchronisation with time. when you are listening to that ticking sound, you might not notice but those seconds are gone out of your life and no matter what you do, you will never get it again. We often don't realise that our time is limited. During school exams, we get a specific time to write answers and we are not permitted for extra time. If some get that extra time that could be their advantage. Our lifetime is also like that exam time but the examiner is the god, who is biased towards some people and does not offer same time limit. Just like exams, we have so many questions in our lives and they all start with our birth.  Look at any child around you, try to talk to them about something they are curious about. You will be...

Free things in our life.

Image
What do we want in our life? What are our needs? Most people will say, they want wealth, power, happiness, success, love, fame, security and freedom.  Of course, all these things are needed in our life. But there are other things too, which are highly valued but we often neglect them. interestingly most of these things are free of cost. for example air, you can not live without it. Hold your breath for a minute and you will experience how important it is. We don't value it because it is available in abundance. Just like air, there are so many gifts of nature available in abundance and we never appreciate it. We are slaves of our worldly desires - wealth, power, pleasure, comfort and fame. We spend almost all of our time seeking them with a feeling that having them will make us happy.  But unfortunately, no matter how much we get it, we will get used to it and will start demanding more. The greed takes over the needs. The most valuable things are free and there is no n...
